Since 2013, each October, I’ve been creating a new drawing or painting every day of the month as part of my Rotty Halloween series. Styles and mediums vary from year-to-year, but I try to keep the series consistent throughout the month. I’ve used many of the drawings over the years as ideas for later paintings (others I’ve tried to forget). In the thick of the month I sometimes find myself burned out and digging deep for any kind of creativity.
I love the additive and subtractive friendliness of charcoal, the splattering and splashing and smearing dirtiness, and the primitive earthiness. It has easily become my go-to medium of choice, and I decided to collect the Rotty Halloween charcoal years and share the lot of them here.
